<p>Chitta Katha Lake is located in Shounter valley, Azad Kashmir at the elevation of 13,500 ft. Chitta Katha means White Stream; it is the local name of the stream coming down from the Hari Parbat originating from the lake called Chitta Katha Sar or lake of the Mount Hari parbat. This Mountain is sacred for some people who relate it to Lord Shiva and consider it abode of the Lord and identify it as Kailash.</p><br>

<p>Karambar Lake , also known as Qurumbar Lake, is a high altitude lake located in Ishkomen, a Tehsil of District Ghizer in Gilgit–Baltistan, near the boundary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. While some other studies by WWF and the Revenue Record of the Government mention location of the Lake in Broghil Valley of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (Reference: Revenue Record of the Govt. of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The lake is located at a distance of 205 km from Gilgit. Some (fabricated) maps clearly show that the entire span of lake is situated within the borders of Gilgit–Baltistan but in fact it is part of the ParkBroghil Valley of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Although, some people say since the flow of Karambar waters itself dims the confusion about lake&#39;s location as lake flows down towards Ishkoman but this theory does not hold water as mere flow of water in a direction does not grant ownership of lake to that downstream area.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>The approximate length of the lake is 3.9 km, width is 2 km and, average depth is 52 m.</p><br>
<p>Karambar Lake is the deepest lake in the valley with a maximum and mean depth of 55m and 17.08m respectively and is spread over a surface area of 263.44 hectare and discharges into Karambar valley of Gilgit Baltistan. Water clarity level is 13.75 (Secchi Disc Reading), which is the highest value ever recorded in the literature of lakes in Pakistan.</p><br>
<p>The Château Élysée is a former hotel located at 5930 Franklin Ave. in the Franklin Village section of Los Angeles, California. It was originally built as a luxury long-term residential apartment house for movie stars by Elinor K. Ince, widow of Thomas H. Ince, the highly successful pioneer silent filmmaker who died in 1924. Designed by eminent architect Arthur E. <h2>As a residential hotel</h2><br>
<p>In 1927, the firm of Luther T. Mayo, Inc. began construction on the four-story, 77-unit turreted castle and its formal gardens on the three-acre former Ince family estate on the southwest corner of Bronson Avenue. The property included a bubbling stream, a tennis court, and a pair of rubber trees that are more than a hundred years old.</p><br>
<p>In a spirit echoing her husband&#39;s contributions in the formative period of the film industry, Mrs. Ince provided a home for many of the artists that were then being drawn to Hollywood. <p>The Allen Steinheim Museum is a historic building and former museum located on the campus of Alfred University at Alfred in Allegany County, New York. It is a crenellated stone structure built from 1876 to 1880 to house the "mineral, geological, natural, and man-made curiosities" of Alfred University&#39;s second president Jonathan Allen. The building was originally started by Professor Ida Kenyon, who wished to make a private residence that resembled the castles of her native Germany. The building is constructed of over 8,000 rock specimens that were combined to form the walls of the structure and 700 samples of local and foreign wood to combine the internal framework. When operating in the 1930s, it was considered the second oldest college museum in the United States. The Federal Writers Project described the museum as exhibiting a unique collection of "rare shells, mounted birds and animals, Indian artifacts and pioneer agricultural implements, early American pottery, Steigel and Sandwich glass, and the finest workmanship in the ceramic arts". The building ceased being used as a museum in the early 1950s, was used as classroom space, and then fell into disrepair.</p><br>
<p>After a 1995 renovation and a 1997 dedication, the Steinheim, which is German for "stone house," has since housed the Robert R. McComsey Career Development Center.</p><br>
<p>In 2008 artist Lenka Clayton devoted time to several projects that sought to call attention to the Steinheim Museums absent collection. <p>The Langenberg rises on the state border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse in Germany and, at, is the highest peak in the Rothaar mountain range, as well as the highest point in the North Rhine-Westphalia and also in the north of Germany outside the Harz Mountains.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The Langenberg lies on the border of the Hochsauerland (Westphalia) and Waldeck-Frankenberg (North Hesse) districts, where the Hochsauerland region transitions into the Upland, between Olsberg-Bruchhausen in the north-northwest, Willingen in the northeast and Niedersfeld (north of Winterberg) in the southwest. The Langenberg summit is about 10 m southwest of the Hessian-Westphalian state border.</p><br>
<p>The Langenberg’s neighbouring peaks include the Hoppernkopf to the north, the Mittelsberg to the east, the Hegekopf to the east-southeast, the Hopperkopf to the southeast, the Clemensberg to the south-southwest and Auf dem Sternrodt to the west.</p><br>
<p>The Burbecke stream emerges west of the Langenberg and the Raken on its northern flank, both within the catchment area of the Gierskoppbach. The Langenberg is passed to the east in a south-north direction by the upper reaches of the Hoppecke, into which a small brook runs that comes out of a valley - Der Keller ("The Cellar") - on the southeast side of the mountain. South of the Langenberg are the crosstracks known as the Oberer Burbecker Platz and Unterer Burbecker Platz. A section of the long-distance footpath known as the Rothaarsteig runs by the summit to the west in a north-south direction, passing a historic boundary stone.</p><br>
<p>There few trees on the Langenberg&#39;s rounded summit itself and it widens out into a mountain heathland to the east; the rest of the mountain is, however, thickly forested.</p><br>
<h2>Height</h2><br>
<p>About 15 m south-southeast of the Langenberg summit, shown on the German Topographical Map (Deutsche Grundkarte) as being, and about 20 m southwest of the aforementioned state border, there is a triangulation station of the German Primary Triangulation Network at a height of (i.e. 10 cm lower).</p><br>
<p>At the summit is a stone with a metal plate inscribed as follows: Langenberg 843 m über N.N. − höchster Berg in N R W ("Langenberg 843 m above N.N. − highest mountain in N R W").</p><br>
<p>Erroneously, the Kahler Asten near Winterberg is often cited as the highest mountain in the region. This is only, but is much better known than the Langenberg due to its weather station and because its mountaintop restaurant in the Astenturm and its high observation tower are popular local destinations.</p><br>
<p>The highest accessible point in the Rothaar Mountains is the observation platform of the Hochheideturm near Willingen (Hesse) with a height of 875.5 m.</p><br>
<p>Dabbahu Volcano  is an active volcano located in the remote Afar Region of Ethiopia. This stratovolcano is part of the Afar Triangle , a highly active volcanic region which includes Erta Ale. An eruption on September 26, 2005 created a large fissure in the ground, known as the Dabbahu fissure.</p><br>
<h2>2005 eruption</h2><br>
<p>The only eruption of the volcano in recorded history occurred on September 26, 2005. Preceding the eruption, the ground swelled and an earthquake swarm consisting of over 130 events occurred. Earthquakes measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. The eruption began 5 kilometers northeast of the summit. Ash from the eruption darkened the area surrounding the volcano for nearly 3 days.</p><br>
<p>The eruption formed a 60 km long fissure and a 30 m wide pumice cone at the fissure&#39;s southern end. Ash reached as far as the administrative center of Teru, located 40 km southwest of the volcano.</p><br>
<h2>Plate tectonics</h2><br>
<p>The volcano is located along the Somali Plate. Researchers predict that the land along this region, known as the East African Rift, will eventually break away, creating a new island consisting of eastern Ethiopia and Djibouti with a new sea in between. Using seismic data from 2005, a research study predicted that this new ocean would likely be formed in about one million years.</p><br>

<p>Terra Cotta Building is a historic office building and display center located at Alfred in Allegany County, New York. It was built in 1892 by the Celadon Terra Cotta Co and later sold in 1906, to the Ludowici Company of Ohio, which became the Ludowici-Celadon Company. It is a one-story, 16 ft, 25 ft building built almost entirely of terra cotta bricks, ornamental and roofing tiles manufactured by Celadon. The building was designed as a sales office for the company, and was considered a "catalog" of their work. A replica was erected at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The building was the only remaining structure after a fire broke out on August 29, 1909 and destroyed what was at the time called Ludowici-Celadon Company.</p><br>
<p>In 1969, when Alfred University planned to construct a new gymnasium on the site, the Alfred Historical Society worked to preserve and move the building. It was relocated to its present site, across the street from the Alfred Post Office, in 1974. The Alfred Historical Society hosts open houses throughout the year for people wishing to examine the interior and learn about the history of the building and the tile company.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<p>Pelican Lake is a 3,585 acre lake located in Oneida County in Wisconsin. It has a maximum depth of 39 ft. Visitors have access to the lake from five public boat landings. A dam is located on the lake&#39;s primary outlet, which feeds into the Pelican River. Pelican Lake serves as one of 21 reservoirs used to regulate and maintain optimal water flow on the Wisconsin and Tomahawk rivers, the process of which is facilitated in part by the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company.</p><br>
<p>Fish inhabiting the lake include muskie, panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye. The lake&#39;s water clarity has historically been low, and its bottom composition is 40% sand, 20% gravel, 10% rock, 30% muck. The lake is eutrophic. Several invasive species are or have been found in the lake, including banded mystery snail, Chinese mystery snail, curly-leaf pondweed, Eurasian water-milfoil, purple loosestrife, and rusty crayfish.</p><br>
<p>Pelican Lake was named for the American white pelicans seen there.</p><br>
<p>The Joseph Kirkwood House is a historic house in the village of Bridgeport, Ohio, United States. Originally home to one of the area&#39;s oldest families, it was built in the middle of the nineteenth century in a mix of architectural styles. Named a historic site in the 1980s, it has been converted into a health care facility.</p><br>
<p>A native of Delaware, Robert Kirkwood emigrated to present-day Belmont County in 1789 after fighting in the American Revolution; he and his family were among the region&#39;s first settlers. Joseph his son erected the present house in 1846 and arranged for its expansion seven years later by the construction of a large ell to the rear. Set on a foundation of sandstone, the wood-and-brick house is covered with a metal roof. The house combines academic and popular architectural styles: the basic plan is that of an I-house, a vernacular construction mode, although Greek Revival styling is present, especially in the careful symmetry of the five-bay facade. Nine windows fill all bays in both stories, except for the post and lintel-surrounded main entrance in the center of the first story. The fenestration on the side of the original house and on the addition is more irregular: on the second story, a single window sits under the gable, separated by large amounts of brick from a trio of windows at the rear of the ell. Chimneys are placed at both ends of the roofline on the original house, with another such structure in the ell; the roof itself is metal.</p><br>
<p>In early 1986, the Kirkwood House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; its connection to Joseph Kirkwood qualified it for designation, as did its historically significant architecture. It is one of two National Register-listed locations in Bridgeport: although located largely in Wheeling, West Virginia across the Ohio River, the Wheeling Island Historic District includes the Aetnaville Bridge, which extends into Bridgeport. By the time of listing, the Kirkwood House was no longer used as a typical residence, having been converted into a group home for the mentally retarded, "Thresholds to Tomorrow".</p><br>
<p>The Samuel N. Brown House is a historic residence in southern Dayton, Ohio, United States. Constructed in the 1870s for a prominent industrialist, it has been used for commercial purposes since the 1920s, and it has been named a historic site.</p><br>
<p>Samuel N. Brown, the original resident, was the owner of the Dayton-based firm of S.N. Brown and Company. Founded in 1847, it produced parts for horse-drawn carriages, such as wheel hubs, spokes, and entire wheels. Brown arranged in 1875 for the construction of the house, which was sold to a local hospital in 1920 and operated it until their bankruptcy in 1923. Much of its history has been spent as the location of an antique shop, although for a time in the 2000s it was used by Madisson House, a garment shop.</p><br>
<p>The Brown House rests on a stone foundation and is covered with an asphalt roof; some sections of the walls are weatherboarded. Built in the shape of the letter "T", the house features components such as a tower at the left of the facade, a prominent mansard roof, and a veranda placed around the whole facade. Under the roof, the eaves feature a cornice composed of brackets with frieze. The house is a two-story structure with numerous dormer windows piercing the roof, most of them arched, while the first floor includes tall rectangular windows and some smaller square windows along with arches. Among the smaller details, yet still prominent, is the railing surrounding the top of the tower. Together, these elements produce the appearance of a Second Empire residence.</p><br>
<p>In 1977, the Brown House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying because of its historically significant architecture and because of its connection to Samuel Brown. Another National Register-listed property, the Westbrock Funeral Home, is located across the street.</p><br>
<p>The Homestead is a historic house on Hudson Avenue in the village of Haverstraw, New York, United States. It is one of the oldest buildings in the village, dating to the early 19th century.</p><br>
<p>Since then it has been home to a number of prominent local residents, and passed down through two different families. It has been altered slightly, with the original front now the house&#39;s rear, but it remains mostly intact. In 1983 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The house sits on a 135 by lot on the east side of Hudson Avenue near the junction with Tor Avenue. The ground slopes steadily down toward the Hudson River to the east, exposing the house&#39;s basement on that elevation. The neighborhood is residential, with a few multiple-unit dwellings.</p><br>
<p>It is a two-story, five-by-two-bay frame structure sided in clapboard. It is topped by a gabled roof shingled in asphalt with a plain cornice. A small kitchen wing extends from the east.</p><br>
<p>All the windows are flanked by louvered shutters. The main entrance is located within a small enclosed porch. Its double inner doors have rose-tinted glass. On the east is a two-story, three-bay open porch with square posts, brackets and a central gable on the roof top. At basement level is a door with sidelights and transom; the first floor&#39;s double door has colonnettes and an architrave.</p><br>
<p>Inside, the floor plan remains unchanged. Finishings are plain and simple with the exception of the main hall and large first floor rooms, which have classically-inspired decoration.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>At the time of the Revolution, most of todays Haverstraw was the property of two farmers. One of them, John Denoyelles, had left his lands to his son Peter just before the war. Peter Denoyelles, later to serve in the New York State Assembly and Congress, built the house around the beginning of the 19th century; the exact year is not certain. The areas first Methodists also met with itinerant preachers at the Homestead, due to Denoyelles&#39; interest in that denomination.</p><br>
<p>Peter left the property to his brother Asbury, then the county sheriff, in his will. Asbury sold the property to his brother George in 1853, the year before the village of Haverstraw incorporated. Shortly after that, George sold it to Edward Pye, first president of the Village Board. Pye would later be elected to local judgeships and serve in the state militia. In 1861, as the Civil War was beginning, Pye (who would later die in action at the Battle of Cold Harbor) sold it to his brother Isaac.</p><br>
<p>Isaac&#39;s tenure as owner would be as short as several of the others. He sold it in 1863 to a lawyer, Abraham Conger. Seven years later, George Snedeker bought it. He died in 1873 and willed the house to his wife, who remained until her death in 1901. Their son Samuel inherited the house, passing it to his sister Lucretia Fowler in 1914. She sold it a year later to a man named Abbie Kennedy.</p><br>
<p>Kennedy lived in the house until selling it to Aloysius Lynch, a longtime Haverstraw schools superintendent, in 1937. He made many overdue repairs and renovations to the house, and shortened the windows on the east and west sides. As the area grew more suburban in the 20th century, streets were laid out in what had been farmland. Hudson Avenue was located such that the house&#39;s rear elevation had to be converted into its front.</p><br>
<p>The Porsangerfjorden  is a fjord in Finnmark county, Norway. The 123 km long fjord is Norway&#39;s fourth-longest fjord. It is located in the municipalities of Nordkapp and Porsanger and it empties out into the Barents Sea. The large island of Magerøya and the Porsanger Peninsula lie along the western shore of the fjord, and the Sværholt Peninsula lies along the eastern shore of the fjord. Helnes Lighthouse sits at the mouth of the fjord, on the western coast.</p><br>
<p>The village of Lakselv sits at the innermost part (southern part) of the fjord. Other settlements along the fjord include the villages of Brenna, Børselv, Indre Billefjord, Kistrand, Olderfjord, Repvåg, and Nordvågen. <p>The fjord is officially named Porsangerfjorden in Norwegian. It is also known informally as Porsangen, but that is not an official name. The Northern Sami name is Porsáŋgguvuotna and the Kven name is Porsanginvuono.</p><br>

<p>The Ashokan edicts in Delhi are a series of edicts on the teachings of Buddha created by Ashoka, the Mauryan Emperor who ruled in the Indian subcontinent during the 3rd century BC. The Edicts of Ashoka were either carved on in-situ rocks or engraved on pillars erected throughout the empire; examples of both are found in Delhi.</p><br>
<p>The first in-situ rock edict was discovered in Delhi in 1966, and establishes the citys ancient historical link with the Ashokan era (273–236 BC). Delhis stone pillar edicts were transported from their original sites in Meerut and Ambala during the reign of Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1309–1388 AD). They were erected in Feruzabad, the fourth medieval city of Delhi, established by Feroz Shah Tughlaq.</p><br>
<p>The inscriptions are written in Prakrit, a colloquial language used in everyday speech. The edicts were intended to teach the people of the morals and ideals of civilised living, to bring peace and harmony to the vast empire.The philosophy bears a striking resemblance to the teachings of the Buddha, which his followers believe lead to enlightenment (the universal law of nature), and the constituent elements of the world as it is experienced (the characteristic of elements).</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Until the 3rd century BC, a large region of the Indian subcontinent was ruled by Chandragupta Maurya (322–298 BC), founder of Mauryan Empire. He was the grandfather of Ashoka. Ashoka’s father Bindusara ruled from 297–272 BC. Ashoka, known as Ashoka the Great, after he took over reigns of the Mauryan Empire from his father then expanded and consolidated his grandfather’s region into a much larger empire with command over large swathes of the Indian subcontinent and with his capital at Pataliputra, the present day Patna in Bihar. Ashoka ruled for three decades. During his reign, he underwent a dramatic change in his life-style after winning the Kalinga War of 261 BC, at the cost of immense loss of life. As one of his edict inscriptions states: "150,000 people were forcibly abducted from their homes, 100,000 were killed in battle, and many more died later on". This event had a profound impact upon him. He was repentant. He then decided to renounce further warfare. He then converted to Buddhist religion, as the ethos of Buddhism (teachings of Buddha, an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (or dukkha), achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth appealed to him. His 13th edict is a form of self indictment: "Even a hundredth or a thousandth part only of the people who were slain, or killed or abducted in Kalinga is now considered as a grievous loss by Devanmpiya, beloved of the Gods, i.e., Ashoka".</p><br>
<p>He avowed that his future actions would entirely be on spiritual lines and devoted to the spread of the doctrine of the right conduct. Two years after the Kalinga war, as a primary member of the Buddhist faith, for 265 days, he undertook a nationwide pilgrimage of holy places of Buddhist religion. On his return to Pataliputra, his capital, in 258 BC, after a grand celebration, he launched his missionary campaign throughout his empire and even spread to South India and Sri Lanka. Ashoka’s son Mahindra was involved in this mission. In 257 BC, he got the first four of his 14 rock edicts inscribed in different parts of his empire. Out of the fourteen rock edicts, one rock edict has been discovered in Delhi, though not in a complete form.</p><br>
<p>While edicts inscribed on rocks were found in many parts of the world, erection of carved pillars was unique to Ashokan times, totally independent of any other structures.</p><br>
<h2>Edicts</h2><br>
<p>Ashokan edicts are significant for the message they convey on the teachings of Buddhism. They have been found across his empire, written in several languages and scripts, but most of those found in India are written in Prakrit, using the Brahmi script. To spread the message in the north-western of the empire, edicts were written in Kharoshti script. Bilingual and bi-scriptural edicts have also been discovered in Kandahar and Afghanistan, written in Greek and Aramaic. Ashokan edicts written on rocks or pillars are considered unique and permanent as compared to the palm leaf or bark writings (perishable materials) of the past during the Harappan civilization, or even early Mauryan Empire edicts. The Brahmi script was not deciphered until 1837, by James Prinsep, an Indian antiquarian. The edicts of Ashoka deal with codes of conduct in respect of moral and religious views, as his personal messages.</p><br>
<p>The edicts are of two types: the in-situ rock edicts and the pillar edicts, both of which are found in Delhi. The rock edicts are further subdivided into two categories, the "major rock edicts" and the "minor rock edicts", based on their age. Minor rock edits are the earliest, followed by major rock edicts, and then the pillar edicts. Major rock edicts have been discovered across India, with 14 personal declarations by Ashoka. Two have been moved to Delhi from their original locations.</p><br>
<p>The minor edicts, which predate the major edicts, have been discovered at 17 locations in different regions of the country. Ten of them are categorized as "minor rock edict I" that proclaim Ashoka’s religious commitments and urge people to adopt this path. The last seven edicts, include the category of "minor rock edict II" that urges people to be obedient and respectful to parents, elders and teachers. The last seven rock edict include the Delhi edict (found in 1966) that is categorized as minor rock edict I. One particular minor rock edict that is housed in Asiatic Society, Calcutta is a dictum to the Buddhists urging them to read the seven scriptural texts.</p><br>
<p>The six basic pillar edicts, which are carved on sandstone, deal mainly with the spread of moral values; Ashoka’s Dhamma cover topics such as kindness, forbearance, and concern for the welfare of his people. These edicts are fairly uniform in their language and text, unlike the rock edicts, but the Delhi-Topra pillar has a long additional message. It abridges and reaffirms the content of other pillars, and to some degree those of the Major Rock Edicts also.</p><br>
<h2>Rock edict in Delhi</h2><br>
<p>The in-situ rock edict in Delhi was discovered in an engraved form on a small patch of rock exposure in Srinivaspuri near Kalkaji temple, close to Bahapur village in South Delhi. The edict categorized as a "Minor edict" written in Brahmi script was a first person message of Ashoka, which exhorts people to follow the Buddhist way of life. It is inscribed on a rock surface with irregular lines and letter size with a number of lines not clearly decipherable. The edict translated into English reads:</p><br>
<p>The rock edict epigraph was discovered on an inclined rock face by a building contractor operating at the site for building a residential colony. Archaeologists immediately examined it on 26 March 1966 and identified it as representing the Minor Rock Edict I of the Ashokan period in the light of its similarity with edicts in 13 other places in different parts of India, such as Barat in Jaipur division (to which Delhi rock edict has close resemblance) and the two pillars in Delhi. The Delhi edict was recorded as the 14th epigraphic version. The inscription covers an area of size 75 cm length and 77 cm height of the rock face. There are ten lines of writing of varying length written in Prakrit language in early Brahmi script and lacks uniformity of the aksharas (letters).</p><br>
<p>One interpretation for the rock edict at Bahapur in Delhi is that it represents the trans-regional trade route of North India as an ancient trade link between the Gangetic Delta and the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. The second view is that it marks the site of a temple since it has been found at the base of a rock exposure near the present day Kalkaji temple. It is claimed that at Kalkaji, where the new Kalka Mandir (temple) exists now, was the old location of a temple (one of the five temples in Delhi) built by Pandavas, heroes of the epic Mahabharata period.</p><br>
<h2>Pillar edicts in Delhi</h2><br>
<p>All of the Ashokan pillar or column edicts were made out of Chunar sandstone quarried from Chunar in the Mirzapur District of Uttar Pradesh. They were chiseled at the quarry and then transported to various places in the country. They were chiseled from massive rock blocks of 1.22 m square and 15.2 m long, which were extracted from the quarry. They were chiseled as monolith pillars of size between 12.2 m and 15.2 m in length with an average diameter of 0.785 m. The pillars were cut, dressed, finely polished into circular columns, and carved with edicts, before being transported to various locations in the country. Two were transferred to Delhi in the 14th century by Feroz Shah Tughlaq.</p><br>
<p>The two pillar edicts are still in Delhi. The one on the Delhi ridge opposite the entrance of Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, close to the Delhi University campus, is popularly known as the Delhi-Meerut Pillar. The other, in the grounds of Feroz Shah Kotla, is known as the Delhi-Topra Pillar.</p><br>
<p>Feroz Shah Tughlaq, who ruled from Delhi as Sultan during the medieval period between 1351 and 1388, was a keen historian, architect, game hunter, and with deep sense of commitment to build public utilities related to irrigation works and establishing urban towns. Feroz Shah, during one of his campaigns, was enthralled by the two spectacular monoliths – inscribed Ashokan pillars he saw, one at Topra near Ambala and the other near Meerut, till then undeciphered – and decided to shift them to his palatial Feruzabad palace in Delhi as "totemic embellishments". He shifted the pillars from these places and got them erected in Delhi; the former in his new capital and the latter on the ridge, near Pir-Ghaib, his hunting palace. The first pillar was erected in the 1350s, next to the Friday mosque in the new city of Feruzabad.).</p><br>
<p>Near the gate of the building that holds the Ashokan pillar, every Thursday afternoon is a kind of djinns date, as a large number of people visit the place to either mollify or revere the djinns or genies (said to be a pre-Islamic belief) that are believed to prowl there.</p><br>
<h3>Delhi-Meerut pillar</h3><br>
<p>The second Ashokan pillar was shifted from Meerut, in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi by Feruz Shah and erected at a location in the northern ridge of Delhi, close to his hunting palace, between the Chauburji-Masjid and Hindu Rao Hospital. It was an elaborately planned transportation, from its original location, using a 42-wheeled cart to bring it up to the Yamuna river bank and then further transporting it by the Yamuna river route using barges. As seen now, it is of10 m height but the pillar was damaged in an explosion during the rule of Farrukshiar (1713–19). The five broken pieces were initially shifted to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, Calcutta and later brought back in 1866 and re-erected in 1887. In the early 17th century, William Finch, a historian chronicler, observed that the pillar had "a globe and half moon at top and diverse inscription upon it".</p><br>
<h3>Delhi-Topra pillar</h3><br>
<p>The Topra Ashokan Pillar, moved from Topra Kalan in Yamunanagar district of Haryana, was erected above the palace building at Feroz Shah Kotla is 13 m high (with one metre below the platform) and made of sandstone. It is finished very well vis-à-vis the second pillar located in Delhi at the ridge. The inscription in Brahmi script, which was deciphered by James Princep, a renowned scholar in Indian antiquarian studies in 1837, conveys the same message as the other Ashokan Pillars erected such as "code of dharma:virtue, social cohesion and piety" but with one difference that on this pillar there is also a reference to issues related to taxation. The building that houses the pillar is a three-storied structure built in rubble masonry. It has a large number of small domed rooms in the first and second floors, with links to the roof. Rooms on each floor have arched entrances, which are now stated to be used for pujas (worship). It is a pyramidal shaped structure with reducing size at each level with the pillar installed on the terrace of the building. It is conjectured that originally the pillar had a lion capital (similar to the Ashoka Emblem), which is the National Emblem of India. Feroz Shah is said to have embellished the top of the pillar with frescoes in black and white stone topped with a gilded copper cupola. But at present, what is visible is the smooth polished surface of the pillar, and an elephant carving added much later. It has also been noted that this pillar, apart from the Ashokan edict, has another set of text inscribed in Sanskrit "below and around Ashokan edict", in nagari script. This inscription records: "the conquests of Visala Deva Vigraharaja IV of the Chauhan dynasty, which was still ruling over Delhi at the time of Ghurid conquests in the 1190s, and his victories over a Mlechha (presumably "Ghaznavid or Gharid"). With this finding, it has been inferred that Visala Deva reused this pillar to record his triumphs in wars.</p><br>
<h2>Transportation techniques</h2><br>
<p>The transportation of the massive pillars to Delhi, planned under the direction of Sultan Feruz Shah, was documented by contemporary historian Shams-i-Siraj.</p><br>
<p>The truncated pillar now at the ruined palace of Feruz Shah came from Khizrabad, in the upstream reaches of the Yamuna River, about 90 km from Delhi. The transportation of the pillar was highly demanding, requiring soldiers (both cavalry and foot) to pitch in with all tools and tackles to transport it to Delhi. Silk cotton from the Silk cotton tree, the simal, was gathered in large quantities to surround the pillar before it was lowered horizontally to the ground. The covering was then removed, and replaced by reeds and raw hide to protect the pillar. A 42-wheeled cart was used to transport it to the river bank, where it was loaded onto a large boat. The cart required 8,400 men to move it, 200 to each wheel. A purpose-built palatial building was constructed out of stone and lime mortar to house the pillar. The square base stone was placed at the base of the pillar before the task was completed. The building is now in a ruined state, but the pillar still stands as it was erected.</p><br>
<p>The McConnell&#39;s Mill Covered Bridge is a wooden covered bridge in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. It spans the Slippery Rock Creek in McConnells Mill State Park, southeast of Rose Point, Built in 1874, the bridge is a Howe truss built on stone foundations and supported by steel girders.</p><br>
<p>Unlike many Pennsylvania counties, Lawrence County never possessed many covered bridges; perhaps only five such bridges were ever built in the county. Today, only the McConnells Mill Covered Bridge and the Banks Covered Bridge near Volant remain. The McConnell&#39;s Mill bridge is particularly significant for its usage of the Howe truss design; it is one of only four extant Howe truss bridges statewide.</p><br>
<p>In 1980, the bridge was recognized for its historical significance by being placed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Banks Bridge.</p><br>
<p>The Dayton Fire Department Station No. 16 was a historic fire station on the near east side of Dayton, Ohio, United States. An architectural landmark constructed in the early twentieth century, it was named a historic site seventy years after being built, but it is no longer extant.</p><br>
<p>Built of brick on a brick foundation, the station was covered with an asbestos roof and featured elements of wood and limestone. Most of the building was two-and-a-half stories tall and covered with a hip roof, although aberrations included a polygonal southeastern corner and a tower on the southern side. Three fire doors composed a significant part of the facade. Constructed in 1909,</p><br>
<p>In 1980, Fire Station 16 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it qualified for inclusion because of its distinctive architecture, which surpassed that of virtually every other extant fire station in the city. Despite this designation, the station has since been removed, and a recently constructed house occupies its place.</p><br>
<p>The Rudolph Pretzinger House is a historic residence in southern Dayton, Ohio, United States. Constructed in the late nineteenth century for a prominent local pharmacist, it now abuts a city hospital, but it has been named a historic site.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Born in 1847, Rudolph Pretzinger emigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of seven and settled in Dayton. The death of his father in 1863 prompted him to undertake mans work, whereupon he earned a pharmacy degree and began a career that culminated in his ownership of a prominent downtown drugstore, a position in which he remained until his 1909 death. Pretzingers American-born younger brother Albert, one of Daytons leading architects, While the Montgomery County court ruled in his favor, the case was reversed on appeal to the circuit court, but Pretzinger was ultimately victorious on appeal to the Supreme Court. Following Pretzingers death, the property remained the home of his widow.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Pretzinger&#39;s house is two and a half stories tall, with access through an arched doorway in the center of the facade; although the southern side is longer than the facade, it is pierced by only four windows and no dooways, versus five and one in the facade. A hip roof covers the house, interrupted at points by small gables with miniature Palladian windows. The northwestern corner of the house is a three-story tower with windows on each story, topped with a conical roof. Limestone was used to construct the foundation and for other exterior elements, and the walls are brick and the roof asphalt. Together, these elements lend the house a Queen Anne appearance.</p><br>
<h2>Historic site</h2><br>
<p>In 1979, the Rudolph Pretzinger House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying because of its historically significant architecture. While the house remains at the intersection of Main and Apple Streets, as it was during Pretzingers lifetime, the property no longer extends south to Wyoming; most of his land is now the site of Miami Valley Hospital. Two other National Register-listed locations lie within a few minutes walk: the former Eagles Building to the north, and the exposition hall at the county fairgrounds across the street to the southwest.</p><br>
<p>The Southern Ohio Lunatic Asylum is an historic structure at 2335 Wayne Ave. in Dayton, Ohio. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1979.</p><br>
<p>The 300 acre complex was designed as a mental asylum in accordance with principles advocated by Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride in the mid-19th century. It was renamed the Dayton State Hospital and later the Dayton Mental Health Center.</p><br>
<p>The distinctive main building at the intersection of Wayne and Wilmington avenues is now a retirement center, the hospital farm is now Kettering&#39;s Miami Valley Research Park, and other hospital land is now the site of private homes and Hospice of Dayton.</p><br>

<p>Ourant&#39;s School is a one room schoolhouse located on Ourant Road, east of Deersville, Ohio. The schoolhouse was placed on the National Register on 1994-03-17.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The schoolhouse was built in 1873 and served the community until 1941. The schoolhouse was purchased by its alumni until it was renovated and restored by Crossroads RC&D. It was then turned over to the Ourant School Memorial Association which maintains the property and currently awards a scholarship to students in the area. The schoolhouse still operates in an educational sense, as each spring a class of second graders spends a day in the one-room setting.</p><br>
<h2>Exterior</h2><br>
<p>The schoolhouse is a simple building constructed of whitewashed boards on a sandstone slab foundation. The entrance is contained in a covered porch with four support posts lining the front facade. The renovations added a wheelchair ramp to the side. The sides of the building contains four double-sashed windows with 12 panels in each window. The high gabled roof supports a square drum with arched openings and capped by a pointed roof. The original school bell is located in the tower with its mountings. A small brick chimney protrudes from the roof in the center of the structure.</p><br>
<p>The schoolhouse is surrounded by three support buildings, including the boys and girls necessaries, as well as a storage building. These were restored at the same time as the schoolhouse.</p><br>
<h2>Interior</h2><br>
<p>The interior of the schoolhouse is furnished with pieces from the 1870s, including the iron worked legs on the oak-top school desks and the large potbelly stove in the center of the room. The coal bucket and scoop are located close to the stove. The teachers desk is located on a dais with a large blackboard behind the teachers desk.</p><br>
<p>The William H. Rose House is located on Tomkins Avenue in Stony Point, New York, United States. It is an ornate Carpenter Gothic-style house from the mid-19th century, with similar outbuildings, built for a wealthy local businessman.</p><br>
<p>In order to preserve it during the construction of a nearby senior citizens&#39; home during the late 20th century, it was moved from its original site a short distance away and rotated. In 1999 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>Property</h2><br>
<p>The house is located on an 0.4 acre lot a short distance east of Liberty Road (US 9W/202), at the corner of Tomkins and Roosevelt Place. The ground in the area slopes gently towards the Hudson River to the east. The neighborhood is residential. A senior citizens&#39; apartment complex, also called Roosevelt Place, is just to the north.</p><br>
<p>It is a two-and-a-half-story, five-by-three-bay balloon frame house on a concrete foundation topped by a steeply-pitched cross-gabled roof shingled in slate, pierced by two brick chimneys at the sides. The south (front) facade has a porch across the entire first story, with a projecting bay window with scroll-sawn vergeboard above it on the second story. The gable above it has a central arched window, with elaborate vergeboards and finials. A paneled frieze and bracketed cornice adorn the roofline.</p><br>
<p>The two side elevations are identical, with a projecting bay window on the southernmost bay of the first story. The north (rear) elevation also matches the front facade, with the exception of an enclosure on the western third of the porch.</p><br>
<p>Inside, the original layout is almost intact. Much of the original trim remains, including the marble fireplace mantel in each room. One of the fireplaces has a coal stove attached. Many of the original light fixtures remain, hanging from plaster medallions in the ceilings.</p><br>
<p>In back is a carriage house with lines similar to the main building. Its cross-gables have a similar Gothic-arched window, and the roof is topped by a square cupola. Next to it is an unadorned outhouse original to the property. Both are considered contributing resources to the property&#39;s historic character.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The land on which the house stands was originally part of a large tract purchased by Resolvert Waldron in 1751. Very little of the land around Stony Point was arable, and in the early 19th century brickmaking arose as the dominant industry, due to the abundant clay underground near the Hudson. Samuel Brewster, a wealthy iron mine owner and descendant of William Brewster, bought the portion inherited by John Waldron, whose farmhouse was on the Rose House&#39;s original site.</p><br>
<p>Brewster bequeathed it to his grandson Richard and his wife Rachel when he died in 1821. Maps and other records from the mid-19th century show the location of the Waldron House and suggest that the Brewsters did not live there, but rather at a house now in the center of town, at what is now the northwest corner of Routes 9W/202 and Main Street. The same records suggest the Waldron House was demolished by a Paul Rose in 1862 to clear the way for a new house. It is possible that the house may have been a speculative venture by the Brewsters, since the market for housing near the river was strong at the time.</p><br>
<p>The design, by an unknown architect, shows the strong posthumous influence of the philosophies of Andrew Jackson Downing and the cottage-type houses he promoted. The decorative vergeboards and steep cross-gabled are common elements in this type of early Gothic Revival house, often called Carpenter Gothic today. When built, it originally occupied a 9.4 acre lot across the street from its present location, and faced north rather than south.</p><br>
<p>Rose, a local brickmaker who left that business to make carriages in New York City, probably bought the home to commute to his business in the city, from which he moved his residence sometime before the Civil War. He bought the house for $5,300 ($ in contemporary dollars), apparently without needing to take out a mortgage.</p><br>
<p>In 1875, he is listed as the owner for the first time. Two years later, he sold it to Minoff Govan, a local physician, while holding the mortgage himself, and bought it back in 1882. The Govans continued to live there, until daughter Edith sold it a Ruth Martz for $1. She held onto the home until 1985, when she was herself living in a New Jersey nursing home. The Housing Development Fund Company, which bought it from her, sold it a month later to a William Helmer.</p><br>
<p>When the Roosevelt House was built, a strong community effort was mounted to preserve the Rose House. Those led to it being sold to Roy Moskoff, once again for $1, on the condition that the house and outbuildings be moved 200 ft across the street and rotated. This was done and the house remains a private residence.</p><br>
<p>The Bassin de Saint-Ferréol was created as the result of a large earth dam across the mouth of the valley of Laudot stream at St. Ferréol in the Montagne Noire. It was originally proposed by Chevalier de Clerville and accepted by Pierre Paul Riquet as an integral part of the Canal du Midi. Riquet needed to provide a sufficient water reservoir to allow the locks to function year round, even in the dry summer season. The dam was begun on 15 April 1667 and was completed in four years. It was the first dam built specifically to supply water to a navigable canal and was by far the greatest single work of civil engineering undertaken during the building of the Canal du Midi.</p><br>
<p>The dam has a crest length of 2,560 ft, a maximum height of 105 ft, and a base thickness of more than 450 ft. Water may be drawn from the reservoir via a stone vaulted tunnel that penetrates the base of the dam. Silt can be removed from the floor of the reservoir through the tunnel. When filled to capacity, the reservoir contains some 180 e6USgal of water.</p><br>
<p>Originally, the basin was to be fed by only the River Laudot. When this was deemed to be insufficient, other streams fed into what Riquet called the "rigole de la montagne". Rigole is a diversionary channel. This stream would have included contributions from the River Alzau, River Vernassone, River Lampillon, River Lampy, and River Rieutort. The stream passed through the 132 yard long, 9 ft diameter Cammazes Tunnel on its way to the basin. The tunnel was built by the military engineer Marshall Sebastien Vauban in 1686-87.</p><br>
<p>The entrance of the Laudot into the basin is split so that one portion goes into the basin and the other portion diverts around the basin and returns to the Laudot downstream of the dam. The waters released from the dam follow the downstream route of the Laudot until they join with the rigole de la plaine at Les Thoumazes. The waters continue to the Bassin de Naurouze before entering the canal itself.</p><br>
<p>Though Riquet took credit for the water supply provided by the basin, much of the knowledge required was provided by Pierre Campmas, a fontainier, and François Andréossy, an hydraulics engineer.</p><br>
<p>The lake lies in the three communes of Vaudreuille (Haute-Garonne), Les Brunels (Aude) and Sorèze (Tarn).</p><br>
<p>The Harrison National Bank building is a two-story brick building located at 101 East Main Street in Cadiz, Ohio. The building was placed on the National Register on December 23, 1993.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The State Bank of Ohio was founded in 1841 and quickly spread to various parts of Ohio, including Cadiz. The bank operated until 1847, when the Harrison County branch changed its charter and was renamed the Harrison National Bank. The building was built almost 40 years later by architect Charles Hamilton.</p><br>
<h2>Exterior</h2><br>
<p>The structure is built of red brick with a smooth stone foundation. The first floor, or basement, serves as storefront and can be accessed only by Main Street. The main entrance is located at the corner and is reached by a flight of stairs. The recessed door is framed by an arch with supportive Ionic columns. Lining the curve of an arch was a sign reading "Harrison National Bank", but now reads "Rosebud Mining Company", the current occupants.</p><br>
<p>The façade of the building contains two floors of large arched windows with decorative capstones. The flat roof is hidden behind a machicolated solid balustrade. Two large brick chimneys can be seen rising from the roof. A side entrance is located on the left side of the building and was once used as a staff entrance.</p><br>
<p>The Franklin College Building No. 5 is located along Main Street, or State Route 9, in New Athens, Ohio. The building houses the Franklin Museum which is dedicated to preserving the building and its primary function. The college building was placed on the National Register on May 8, 1987.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>John Walker, an abolitionist and Presbyterian Church minister, established Alma College in New Athens in 1818. The primary function of the college was to promote religion and abolitionist beliefs in the area. The college was renamed Franklin College in 1825, but the college kept its original mission. Over the span of operations the college operated out of several buildings around New Athens.</p><br>
<p>Over the course of over 100 years, the college was key in the education of two governors, eight USA Senators, and nine USA Congressmen and twenty state legislators. The college also graduated Titus Basfield, an African-American student and former slave, as well as several prominent women.</p><br>
<p>The college slowly dwindled until only one building remained, which ceased operations in 1919, due to a decrease in enrollment. The building became affiliated with Muskingum College in New Concord from 1919 until 1927. The New Athens School District purchased the building and operated the high school in the building from 1927 to 1971, the middle school from 1971 to 1987, after which it sat vacant. The Franklin Museum purchased the building in 1992 and opened the building as a museum.</p><br>
<h2>Exterior</h2><br>
<p>The current building, number 5 of the original college layout, sits on a slight hill overlooking Main Street below. The building dates from 1900, after the original log structure burned down in 1899. The building was designed by Joseph W. Yost of the firm Yost & Packard, and consists of red bricks with white wood trim boards. The main building is shaped like a "U", with the wings facing the street. The recessed main entrance is located in the center of the "U" and is framed by four Corinthian columns supporting an entablature and a pediment. The entablature is emblazoned with a nameplate reading "Franklin Museum". The pediment above contains dentil molding with a frieze containing "1900". The wooden double doors are topped by a transom light. Above this entrance is a square window with sandstone quions.</p><br>
<p>The building rests upon rusticated sandstone blocks with small rectangular windows illuminating the bottom floor. The first and second floors contain large rectangular windows with sandstone casings. On either side of the entrance are three double-sashed windows. The wing projections each contain a palladian window on the main floor with three windows above.</p><br>
<p>The roof is supported by an entablature and overhangs the structure. Decorative brackets line the entablature along the building. The hipped roof is pierced by three dormer windows with the central dormer containing a decorative pediment. A drum supporting an open cupola with eight arches with Doric columns rises from the center of the roof, to either side of the cupola is a large brick chimney.</p><br>
<p>The John Reaves House is a historic residence and government building in the village of Freeport, Ohio, United States. Constructed by one of the areas earliest settlers, it was later home to one of Freeports most significant citizens. After years of use as a house, it was converted into non-residential purposes, and it has been named a historic site.</p><br>
<p>Daniel Easley settled at the site of Freeport circa 1804 after migrating from Virginia. The date at which he built the house is unknown, although it was certainly no later than 1820. Later in life, Easley journeyed farther west and established the city of Freeport in Stephenson County, Illinois. Before leaving, he sold his home to the family of John Reaves, who gained a posthumous reputation as one of the villages significant early residents. As a civilian, he was among Harrison Countys earliest teachers, and villagers honored him as the first Harrison County resident to die in the war of the rebellion; he was even the first man in the village to enlist after the fall of Fort Sumter. Reaves home is a small brick building with a central entrance on the facade, as well as a subsidiary side door. The building is one and one-half stories tall, resting on a stone foundation, with walls that rise to side-facing gables topped with chimneys. Following Reaves death, the house was converted into a commercial building; by 1888, it had become home to Freeport&#39;s first bank. In later years, it was later given to village officials, who employed it as the village hall and as a museum. It has since become a library, the Clark Memorial branch of the Cadiz-based Puskarich Public Library.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in mid-1977, qualifying because of its historically significant architecture; the oldest surviving building in Freeport, it has experienced very few changes since its construction.</p><br>
<p>The Roswell and Elizabeth Garst Farmstead Historic District is a farm in Guthrie County, Iowa, United States, near the city of Coon Rapids. It is significant as the home of farmer and hybrid corn populizer Roswell Garst. During the 1930s and 1940s, Garst played an active role in the conversion of old-style family farms to modern agribusiness. He was a key marketer of hybrid seed corn, which greatly increased corn yields per acre. Further, he espoused the use of nitrogen and other chemical fertilizers to renew soil so that fields need not be left fallow in order for the soil to replenish, allowing farmers to grow more acres of corn. Additionally, he embraced the use of cellulose from corncobs left after processing seed corn as cattle feed.</p><br>
<p>The farm is also famous as site of a visit on September 23, 1959, by Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev. The visit was not their first meeting, and it was by Khrushchevs request. Garsts farm had been visited by Soviet officials first in 1955, as an unofficial extra when they were on an organized tour of smaller farms. The Garst farm, with its use of hybrid corn and other agricultural innovations, was the only large size farm at all comparable to the scale of Soviet collective farms that the official was able to visit, and that was only by getting away from the official tour. Subsequently, Garst visited the Soviet Union to sell hybrid corn there and spread information about modern American farming methods. He met Khrushchev, and they found they had much in common. When Khrushchev visited America in 1959, he was adamant that his visit include a trip to Garst&#39;s farm in Iowa.</p><br>
<p>After the conclusion of the visit, Llewellyn Thompson, then the USA ambassador to the Soviet Union, stated that the visit to the Garst farm was one of the most significant parts of Khrushchev&#39;s journey to the United States. This visit, combined with plummeting yields from Soviet agriculture, helped to lead Khrushchev to attempt an overhaul of the Soviet agricultural system.</p><br>
<p>The main building is a 1.5 story farmhouse. It includes 11 other contributing buildings, 3 contributing structures and one contributing site.</p><br>
<p>The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 12, 2009 and the listing was announced as the featured listing in the National Park Service&#39;s weekly list of August 21, 2009. Currently the main house of the Roswell and Elizabeth Garst Farmstead Historic District is the office for the Whiterock Conservancy.</p><br>
<p>The site is located at 1390 Highway 141 in the northwestern corner of Guthrie County.</p><br>
<p>The Thomas H. Hoatson House  is a house located at 320 Tamarack Street in Laurium, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. At 13,000 ft&sup2, it is the largest mansion in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.</p><br>
<h2>Thomas H. Hoatson</h2><br>
<p>The house was designed by Charles W. Maass and brother, Frederick A. Maass and built in 1908 for Thomas Hoatson Jr. Thomas Sr. arrived in Bruce Mines, Ontario, where, on October 20, 1861, Thomas Jr. was born. In 1870, the family moved a final time to Calumet, Michigan, where Thomas Sr. began work as superintendent of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, a position he held until his death in 1897.</p><br>
<p>Thomas Hoatson Jr. attended school in Calumet until he was seventeen, after which he followed in his father&#39;s footsteps and went to work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. In March, 1901, Hoatson was involved in organizing the Bisbee Mine in Bisbee, Arizona, along with his elder brother James and other investors. Thomas Hoatson was elected second vice-president of the company. The mine later changed its name to the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company, and proved wildly successful, netting the investors, including Hoatson, substantial wealth.</p><br>
<p>Despite the Arizona location of the Bisbee mine, Hoatson chose to make his home in the Keweenaw Peninsula. He also served as vice-president of several other mines, as well as president of the Calumet State Bank and a director of the First National Bank of Calumet.</p><br>
<p>On November 24, 1886, Hoatson married Cornelia Chenowyth of Rockland. The couple had six children: Gussie, Calvin Dean, Chester, James Ramsey, Gertrude, and Grace Lorimer. Thomas Hoatson Jr. died on February 1, 1929.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Thomas Hoatson Jr. built his house as a surprise for his wife and children. The house, completed in 1907, is notable for the technological advancements included in the design.</p><br>
<p>After Hoatson&#39;s death, the house passed through the hands of a series of owners, some of whom stripped the original stained glass and lighting fixtures. under the name "Laurium Manor Inn."</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Hoatson House is a -story wood-frame structure of Neoclassical design. The house is rectangular with a red sandstone foundation and clapboard exterior.</p><br>
<p>The interior has 45 rooms covering 13,000 square feet, and boasts exceptionally fine detailing. The first floor contains a library measuring 23 ft by 23 ft, a dining room measuring 17 ft by 23 ft, and a reception hall measuring 12 ft by 40 ft with triple staircase. Also on the first floor are a den with an iridescent tile fireplace surround and painted murals, a kitchen, and pantry space. The second floor had six bedrooms and three bathrooms. The third floor had three more bedrooms, a bathroom, a cedar room, and a billiard room measuring 50 ft by 50 feet.</p><br>
<p>Woodlawn is a former estate house overlooking the Hudson River in Garrison, New York, United States. It was designed in the mid-19th century by Richard Upjohn, who resided in the area for the last years of his life.</p><br>
<p>Later on it became the Malcolm Gordon School, and it is currently the headquarters of the Hastings Center, a prominent bioethics research institution. In 1982 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>Property</h2><br>
<p>Woodlawn is a 42 acre property on the west side of NY 9D just south of St. Basil Academy, at one time the estate of New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert. It is a complex of several buildings, three of which are considered contributing resources to the Register listing.</p><br>
<p>The main house is a two-story brick structure on a stone foundation. There are frame single-story additions on the north and east. Its steeply-pitched cross-gabled roof, with exposed rafters at the eaves, is pierced by two dormer windows on either side and a brick chimney at the south end. On the west (front) facade is an oriel window with a balcony above. A porch with Corinthian columns wraps around the south and west sides of the house.</p><br>
<p>On the east the addition, originally built as a detached gym and now the center&#39;s Morison Library, is now connected to the house via a breezeway. The north extension projects from the porch and includes a garage, workshop, and apartment. A small stucco kitchen wing has been added to the north side of the house as well.</p><br>
<p>The three detached buildings are a combination stable and hayloft, carriage shed and ice house. The first, a one-story stucco structure, has since been converted into an apartment. The shed and ice house, frame and board-and-batten respectively, are now used for storage.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>William Moore, a partner in a large New York City importing firm, commissioned Upjohn to design the house in 1854. He and his wife and their descendants used it as a summer residence until it was purchased by Malcolm Gordon in 1927 to start the boys&#39; boarding school he named after himself.</p><br>
<p>Gordon made the changes to the property. The north wing was built in 1931 and expanded eight years later. Two decades later, in 1956, the gym was added. The kitchen wing was built in 1966, and three years later the garage on the north wing was added. The school remained active until the early 1980s.</p><br>
<p>The Hastings Center moved in a decade later. Some renovations were necessary.</p><br>
<p>Norfolk Crescent in Bath, Somerset, England was built between c.1793 and c.1822 and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building. The original design was by John Palmer, but minor alterations were later made by John Pinch.</p><br>
<p>The Georgian terrace, which is known as Cumberland House, includes numbers 1 to 7 which have been converted into flats, and numbers 8 to 18 consecutively. Each has five storeys (basement, ground floor, piano nobile, second floor and attic) and the central portion has 6 Ionic pilasters.</p><br>
<p>There is a green area in front of the crescent that was originally a formal garden for the residents, surrounded by railings. A small circular building in the corner of the gardens is the old watchman&#39;s hut, and is also Grade II* listed.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<h3>Richard Bowsher's Development</h3><br>
<p>In March 1792 a solicitor named Richard Bowsher took a lease on 5 acre of land next to the river Avon at what was then the western edge of the city of Bath. The lease stipulated houses of similar style and quality to those being erected in the nearby New King Street should be built on the land. As with other Bath developers, Bowsher&#39;s sub-leased plots of ground to craftsmen, on the condition that they would build houses on them, which would subsequently be let out to wealthy families. Several streets were planned with over 100 houses, the centrepiece being a crescent called Norfolk Place (later changed to Norfolk Crescent). The architect John Palmer was engaged to designed a facade for the buildings.</p><br>
<p>However, in early 1793 a financial crisis, caused by the Bath Bank crash, brought disaster. Some of the builders went bankrupt and others were reluctant to take on new projects. None of Bowsher&#39;s houses were complete, but he had to continue paying rent for the land. Nevertheless, he survived the crash and in the 19th century the development was scaled down to a reduced plan with two main streets, Norfolk Crescent and Nelson Place, and the short Nile Street linking to the Upper Bristol Road to the north. These streets were named after Admiral Nelson, his home county (Norfolk) and his most famous victory to date (the Battle of the Nile, since the name was chosen before the Battle of Trafalgar was fought in 1805). The proposed streets in front of the crescent were abandoned and instead the area was made into a formal garden for the residents of Norfolk Crescent and Nelson Place, with each house paying £2.2 annual rent for their upkeep. The renewed scheme also saw a new architect, John Pinch, making some minor alterations to the design.</p><br>
<p>Even after the reduction in scale the work progressed slowly. The houses in Norfolk Crescent were gradually completed and occupied, but the last house was not finished until 1822 - thirty years after it had been planned. The houses in Nile Street and in Bowshers part of Great Stanhope Street were built between 1810 and 1820, but the houses in Nelson Place were not started until later. Nos. 1 and 2 were built as large houses (matching Norfolk Crescent) and the others were smaller, cheaper houses designed by Pinch but even using these houses it was not possible to complete the row. Thus, Bowshers development was largely complete by the 1830s, albeit in a reduced form compared with the original plan.</p><br>
<h3>Palmer's Design</h3><br>
<p>John Palmer&#39;s plan for Norfolk Crescent had nineteen three bay houses (No. 16 Great Stanhope Street and Nos. 1-18 Norfolk Crescent) in an arc with a radius of 420 ft. As was common with late 18th century Bath houses, the mansard roof with dormer windows was dispensed with, the facade instead stretching all the way up to the top of the houses, with a parapet above the attic windows. The two end houses were to have four Ionic pilasters on the main facade. The five central bays of the terrace were to have matching pilasters and a pediment in place of the attic windows. Nelson Place was to have a matching facade, but with a slightly longer terrace containing twenty-three houses.</p><br>
<h3>Pinch's Alterations</h3><br>
<p>At some point in the 19th century the design was altered, probably by John Pinch. The pediment was moved to be above the attic storey, so that the attics of the central houses were not deprived of light. Palmers plan had a carved tympanum in the pediment, but this was never made, probably due to a lack of funds. Pinch also added balconies with wrought iron railings on the piano nobile (first floor) of all the houses. The iron lamp holders over the entrances to Nos. 7 and 14 are also likely to be Pinchs work.</p><br>
<h3>Construction</h3><br>
<p>Construction work on the houses in Norfolk Crescent (at the time still known as Norfolk Place) began in 1792 when builders first took leases on the various plots. However the building work soon stopped due to the financial crisis. When construction work started again in the 19th century the market was much slower and the houses were completed gradually, when there was money available. For instance in 1817 Nos. 1-9, No. 14 and Nos. 16-18 were complete, but the intermediate houses were still not finished. No. 11, the last house to be completed, was finished in 1822.</p><br>
<p>From the 1830s porch extensions were added on to the front of many Georgian houses in Bath, but this would have affected the visual balance of the crescent&#39;s facade, so it could not be done on Norfolk Crescent. However the owners of the two end houses (No. 16 Great Stanhope Street and No. 18 Norfolk Crescent), which had their entrances on the north and south ends of the crescent, did built full-height porch extensions on these houses without affecting the facade.</p><br>
<h3>Bombing and reconstruction</h3><br>
<p>In 1942 during the Second World War an incendiary bomb landed near the crescent and the north end was gutted by fire. It was not repaired until 20 years later in the 1960s, when Nos. 1-7 were rebuilt with the same facade as the original. The mid-19th century porch extension to the end house was omitted in the reconstruction. Behind the facade, the reconstructed houses are a block of flats, not a replica of the original Georgian building.</p><br>
<p>The Palacio Valdés Theatre is located in Avilés, Principality of Asturias in Northern Spain.</p><br>
<p>The building was designed by the architect Manuel del Busto at the beginnings of the 20th century. This architect planned a theatre in Neobaroque style with longitudinal layout, in parallel to the front façade because of the technical problems related to the chosen location.</p><br>
<p>The First Stone solemn act took place on 5 August 1900. Clarín, the famous writer was one of the most important people who attended that event. Mainly because of economical problems, the works had to stop several times so that the building was not finished until 20 years later. The inauguration act took place in 1920, when the building received the name of the famous writer Armando Palacio Valdés, "hijo adoptivo" of the town, who attended the first performance.</p><br>
<p>The theatre was opened between 1920 and 1972, with all sort of performances. It was also used as a cinema. It was closed from 1972 until 1992. Once restored, it started a second, successful life.</p><br>
<p>On 28 December 1982 it was declared "Bien de Interés Cultural", in the "Monument" category.</p><br>
<p>At present, it is part of the "La red nacional de teatros".</p><br>

<p>The historical buildings and structures of Zion National Park represent a variety of buildings, interpretive structures, signs and infrastructure associated with the National Park Service&#39;s operations in Zion National Park, Utah. Structures vary in size and scale from the Zion Lodge to road culverts and curbs, nearly all of which were designed using native materials and regional construction techniques in an adapted version of the National Park Service Rustic style. A number of the larger structures were designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, while many of the smaller structures were designed or coordinated with the National Park Service Branch of Plans and Designs. The bulk of the historic structures date to the 1920s and 1930s. Most of the structures of the 1930s were built using Civilian Conservation Corps labor.</p><br>
<p>The version of the National Park Service Rustic style that was adopted at Zion was less extreme in its rustic character than that employed at other parks. Compared with the Bryce Canyon Lodge, the Zion Park Lodge used smaller elements of timber and stonework, and employed milled lumber in place of rough log elements. This reflected the more settled character of the Zion area, which retained farms and irrigation systems at the time the first visitor facilities were built.</p><br>
<p>Many of Zion&#39;s historical structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), either as individual structures or as contributing structures in a historic district. (The NRHP-listed structures are also listed in alphabetical order in National Register of Historic Places listings in Zion National Park.)</p><br>
<p>The park also preserves remnants of early Mormon settlement in Zion Canyon, which began in 1862. Two irrigation canals and a cable draw works remain.</p><br>
<h2>Utah Parks Company</h2><br>
<p>The Zion Lodge was designed in the rustic style by Underwood in 1924 as the centerpiece of Zion&#39;s visitor facilities.</p><br>
<p>The Zion Lodge Historic District comprises a large group of historic lodgings and support facilities surrounding the Zion Lodge, most of which were designed by Underwood. The district&#39;s National Register of Historic Places reference is 82001718.</p><br>
<p>The Zion Nature Center-Zion Inn was designed by Underwood for the Utah Parks Company as a cafeteria, gift shop and office for the tourist cabins surrounding it. The inn was built in 1934 in the National Park Service Rustic style and was used by the Utah Parks Company until 1972, when the Park Service remodeled it for use as a nature center. The structure features rubblestone pilasters at each corner with a "framing out" style infill. The roof is framed in log. The Zion Inn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It was recently restored to the original Underwood exterior design. <h2>Transportation and infrastructure</h2><br>
<p>The Floor of the Valley Road follows the North Fork of the Virgin River through Zion Canyon. The nine-mile road was planned by the National Park Service to blend with the landscape while highlighting the canyon&#39;s features for motorists. The earliest portions were built in 1916, but the bulk of the present road and associated structures were built in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project.</p><br>
<p>The Cable Creek Bridge is on the Floor of the Valley Road. It is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its integrity as an example of the National Park Service Rustic style of design. The single-span sandstone-faced concrete bridge was designed by the Western Office of Design and Construction of the National Park Service, and was built in 1932 with Civilian Conservation Corps labor. <p>The Zion-Mount Carmel Highway was built to link Zion with Grand Canyon National Park. Completed in 1930, the road features a 5,613 ft tunnel in the wall of Pine Creek Canyon. The road enables visitors to do a loop tour of Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument.</p><br>
<p>The East Entrance Checking Station was built in 1935 by Civilian Conservation Corps labor from CCC Camp NP-2 at the eastern end of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. The station was designed by the National Park Service Branch of Plans and Design in the National Park Service Rustic style, featuring rough sandstone walls. <p>The East and South Entrance Signs are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The signs comprise two locally-quarried red sandstone pillars flanking the east and south entrance road, with a horizontal log projecting from one pylon supporting a sign. The signs were designed by the National Park Service Branch of Plans and Designs in 1936 and was built by Civilian Conservation Corps labor from Camp NP-2. They were altered in 1940 to the design of Park Service architects H.W. Young and A.C. Kuehl. The sign reflects a consistent design theme that was developed for many park structures in Zion. <p>The Grotto Camping Ground Comfort Stations were built in the same style and material as the Grotto Residence. The south station was built in 1925, while the north station was built in 1930-31 to a design by Harry Langley. The walls are massive stepped sandstone in 15-to-18-inch courses with board-and-batten infill at the gables and 24 in roof overhangs at the sides and 36 in overhangs at the ends. Both were renovated in 1959. <p>The South Campground Amphitheater was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and 1935. The CCC work is visible in the stonework of the stage and its retaining walls, walkways and steps. Red sandstone was used in accordance with NPS Rustic design principles. The original wood benches were placed on stone blocks and were replaced with metal seats in 1956. <p>The Museum-Grotto Residence is the oldest building remaining in Zion National Park. The stonework is significantly larger in scale than later work. A number of Mission 66 buildings were constructed in the 1950s, but are not considered contributing structures. <p>A total of 4 mi long, the East Rim Trail was improved by local rancher John Winder in 1896. Originally an Indian trail, it was further improved in 1918-1919 by the National Park Service. The lower two miles of trail provided access to the Cable Mountain Draw Works. The trail improvements include rubblestone retaining walls typical of park improvements found elsewhere in Zion. <p>The Angels Landing Trail-West Rim Trail was built in 1926 following the completion of the East Rim Trail. The Angels Landing trail climbs a sandstone spine, providing rails and chain handholds for a 300 ft climb in.5 mi. It joins the West Rim Trail, built in 1925-26 and extended in 1935. Both trails were planned by Thomas Chalmers Vint of the NPS Branch of Plans and Design and Walter Ruesch, the Zion Park building foreman. Reusch lent his name to Walter&#39;s Wiggles, a series of 21 switchbacks. <p>The Emerald Pools Trail begins at the Zion Lodge westward to Lower Emerald Pool. Built in 1932, it was created using only hand tools. An extension built the same year runs to the Grotto Campground. The first section required the construction of stone steps to a high standard of design and finish. Repairs to the stonework were carried out in 1969. <p>The Gateway to the Narrows Trail, also known as the Riverside Walk, is a relatively short nature trail of one mile along the Virgin River. It connects the parking area at the Temple of Sinawava with The Narrows and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail uses local materials such as red sandstone to blend with its surroundings, following the tenets of the National Park Service Rustic style. Survey work was carried out in 1928 by National Park Service engineer Guy D. Edwards. Construction began the following year under the supervision of Walter Ruesch. On August 1, 1968 a rock slide buried a 250-foot portion of the trail with debris ranging from three to twenty feet deep. Rather than removing the rock, the trail was routed over the slide. The trail was upgraded for accessibility by the handicapped in 1982. <p>The Grotto Trail begins at Zion Lodge, running along the floor of the valley to the Zion Museum at what is now the Grotto Picnic Area along the original path of the Floor of the Valley Road. The trail was designed by landscape architect Harry Langley and was built by the National Park Service in 1932 using only hand tools. Sandstone retaining walls and culverts were used to continue the rustic style. <p>The Hidden Canyon Trail was built in 1928 under the guidance of Guy D. Edwards and F.A. Kittredge to provide access to a hanging canyon. The trail consists of three sections. The first section starts at the East Rim Trail and runs for 950 ft as a horse trail with eleven switchbacks with dry-laid sandstone retaining walls. The 745 ft section was built as a hikers-only trail along a natural shelf, with a small section of blasted passage with steps and a hand rail. The final section was blasted from a steep slope by workers hanging from ropes. The completed work was designed to blend into the landscape, while vegetation was preserved during construction. <h2>Archeological sites</h2><br>
<p>Parunuweap Canyon Archeological District includes several Ancient Pueblo Peoples ruins dating between 500-1150 AD. The sites are associated with the Virgin Anasazi peoples and consist of small masony dwelling and granary complexes. The site was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1996, reference number 96001235.</p><br>

<h2>Other historic places</h2><br>
<p>The Cable Mountain Draw Works was built by David Flanigan beginning in 1901, although he had first proposed the system as a teenager in 1885. From 1904, timber was harvested from the heights above the valley and moved from Cable Mountain down to the draw works in the valley, a vertical distance of 2,000 ft. The system fulfilled an 1863 prophecy made by Brigham Young that timber would descend from the cliffs "like a hawk flying." Before the draw works were constructed, the timber on Cable Mountain was obtained only by a ten-day round trip. Flanigan sold the operation in 1906 to Alfred Stout and O.D. Gifford of Springdale, who operated it as the Cable Mountain Timber Works. The draw works were destroyed by lighting and rebuilt in 1911. Intermittent operation continued until 1926 when the system was abandoned. The cables were removed in 1930. It is the oldest pre-park structure in Zion. <p>The Pine Creek Irrigation Canal was excavated around the 1890s by Mormon farmers, using water from Pine Creek to irrigate farmland for about 2.5 mi on the west side of the Virgin River near Bridge Mountain. Water was drawn from Pine Creek just upstream from the creek&#39;s confluence with the Virgin River and used to feed the Flanigan Ditch distribution system. Original rock retaining walls remain visible in some sections. New headworks were built in 1934 by Civilian Conservation Corps labor from Camp NP-2 using a 15 ft sandstone boulder as an anchorage, to draw water directly from the Virgin River 1/4 mile upstream from Pine Creek, conveying the water over Pine Creek in a flume. Funding was provided by the Public Works Administration. <p>The Oak Creek Irrigation Canal was built in 1935 by CCC labor to irrigate vegetation in the park&#39;s South Campground. Additional improvements were undertaken in 1941 to replace wood flumes and to build new concrete diversion dams. The 2 mi canal diverts water from the North Fork of the Virgin River with a diversion dam that spans the river. A headgate on the west bank controls the flow. Further works executed in 1959 and 1961 provide irrigation to the visitor center and the Pine Creek residential area before laterals take off to irrigate the South Campground. The ditch then rejoins the river. The canal is largely lined with concrete. A siphon connected to the south entrance plaza. <p>Flanigan Ditch was constructed about 1880 by the Flanigan family, Mormon pioneers in the Zion valley. The Flanigans acquired water rights for a portion of the flow of the Virgin River in 1880 to water the familys lands along the river. The family was prominent, with the feature now known at "The Watchman" called "Flanigan Peak", while the location of the present Watchman campground was called Flanigan Field. Over time, the farmlands on the lower portion of the ditch were abandoned below the present outlet at the Watchman campground. The buried portion of the ditch is regarded as a potential archeological feature relating to the period of pioneer settlement. The lands surrounding the ditch were acquired by the Park Service from the Flanigans in 1960. Of the original 15,000 ft of ditch, about 12,000 ft are within the park, with the upper third largely intact but unwatered for part of its length. A portion continues to carry water for irrigation of the Watchman campground. Expansion of the park boundaries has included a buried and abandoned portion of the lower ditch. The ditch shares its headworks with the Springdale Consolidated Irrigation Companys pipeline, which provides municipal water to the town through a pipeline installed in 1988. <p>Asilo de Ancianos de Mayagüez, also known as Asilo De Pobres or Asilo Municipal, was originally built, in the Classical Revival style, as a shelter for the poor. For some time, Salvador Agrón, the inspiration for the Broadway musical The Capeman, lived in the building with his mother. In 1962 it became Asylum for the elderly. The idea for the Asylum for the poor began with a campaign to build it by Salvador Suau y Mulet when he was Mayor of Mayagüez. The number of elderly increased, and in 1967 occupational therapy and arts and craft were added by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, they also run the laundry, cafeteria, pharmacy and others.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.</p><br>
<p>In 2016 the elderly residents where relocated to a larger and newer building near the Eugenio María de Hostos Airport.</p><br>
<p>Kingsmead Square in Bath, Somerset, England was laid out by John Strahan in the 1730s. Many of the houses are listed buildings.</p><br>
<p>Number 12, 13 and 14 is made up of Rosewell House, which forms one building with Numbers 1 and 2 Kingsmead Street. The house is named after T Rosewell, who commissioned it from Strahan and whose sign, a rose and a well, can be seen on the baroque facade with the date 1736. It is a three-storey building with a mansard roof. The ground floor has been changed to include shop fronts, but a detached Ionic porch can still be seen. Dr Joseph Butler Bishop of Durham theologian, apologist, and philosopher died at Rosewell House 1752. Originally Rosewell House was the end of a rank of houses, but neighbouring 11, 12 and 13 Kingsmead Square were demolished to make New Street on a diagonal alignment out of the square to provide better access to the new Bath Green Park railway station.</p><br>
<p>At the centre of the square is a large London Plane tree, about 20 metres tall. The square has full public access, with a ground surface of concrete slabs and cobbles.</p><br>
<p>Lake Shannon is a long, narrow reservoir on the Baker River in Skagit County, Washington in the United States. Formed in the 1920s by the construction of an arch dam just above the town of Concrete, the lake is approximately 7.5 mi long and averages 0.6 mi wide when full. Located just outside the western boundary of North Cascades National Park in the Mount Baker National Forest, Lake Shannon serves as the lower reservoir for Puget Sound Energy&#39;s Baker River Hydroelectric Project.</p><br>
<p>Before the creation of Lake Shannon, the area was used primarily for fur trapping, logging, and concrete making. The construction of Lower Baker Dam blocked salmon migration in the Baker River. An artificial fish passage system was begun in the 1950s and completed in 1959 after the construction of Upper Baker Dam, located upstream of Lake Shannon. The lake has abundant landlocked kokanee salmon, the by-product of salmon spawning in lake tributaries. Fishing, boating and water skiing are popular recreational activities on the lake.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Baker River flows southeast and south for about 30 mi to meet the Skagit River at Concrete. Less than 1 mile (1.6 km) above its mouth, a 285 ft arch dam, the Lower Baker Dam, straddles an extremely tight and narrow gorge to form Lake Shannon, a 2,190 acre lake.</p><br>
<p>The lake occupies a cleft in the Baker River Valley between a prominent river terrace to the west and a less obvious one on the east. While the west slope directly above the lake is dissected with many canyons, the east slope is smaller and smoother. The lake is surrounded by prominent forested mountains, but the surrounding terrain is not as steep and rugged as the upper watershed.</p><br>
<p>The reservoir is widest in the lower half and especially in a stretch about 3 mi upstream of the dam. Near the middle, the lake narrows dramatically as it squeezes between the west shore and a narrow promontory that juts out into the valley. The upper half of the lake is very narrow, and the far upper end protrudes into the Mount Baker National Forest. Just above the north end of the lake, the Upper Baker Dam blocks the Baker River once again to form an expanded Baker Lake.</p><br>
<p>The dominant geographical feature in the area is Mount Baker, which rises 10,781 ft a few miles to the northwest of Lake Shannon. Mount Shuksan, a slightly smaller peak, rises 9,127 ft further to the north-northeast. Aside from the Baker River, some major streams that feed the lake are Thunder Creek (which meets the lake near the promontory that nearly severs it in half) and Sulphur Creek, which flows directly into the lake during high water.</p><br>
<p>The Baker River Road runs in a northerly direction along the east side of Lake Shannon into North Cascades National Park, while the North Cascades Highway crosses the Baker River just below Lake Shannon. Although most of the inflow to Lake Shannon is from releases from Upper Baker Dam, it also receives inflow from 82 square miles of adjacent watershed.</p><br>
<h2>Dams and facilities</h2><br>
<p>The Lower Baker Dam (48&deg;32&prime;51&Prime;N latitude, 121&deg;44&prime;28&Prime;W longitude) was constructed in 1925 as the first of two dams that generate power for the Baker River Hydroelectric Project, owned by Puget Sound Energy. It is a thick-arch dam 285 ft high and 550 ft in length. The spillways are over the crest, consisting of about twenty-four openings. A penstock diverts water from the lake to a powerhouse on the left bank of the river, which generates 79 MW of power, and returns the water to the river just downstream of the dam. This results in a stretch of river that is nearly dry most of the time. The full pool elevation of the lake is 438 ft, while the minimum lake level for power generation is 370 ft and dead pool elevation is 355 ft. The lake holds 161,470 acre.ft of water at full pool.</p><br>
<p>Below the Lower Baker Dam, another structure — the "fish passage structure" — exists as the river flows through the town of Concrete. This concrete weir is the first stage in a fish elevator and flume that carries anadromous fish upstream to Baker Lake, where they are released into the water and allowed to swim upstream to the Baker River&#39;s remaining spawning grounds.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Prior to the construction of the Baker River project, Lake Shannon did not exist and Baker Lake was a smaller lake formed by a glacial moraine. Anadromous fish would migrate up the Baker in numbers of up to 20,000 each spring. In the 19th century, the Baker River area was primarily used for the timber industry. Large deposits of lime around the mouth of the Baker River were taken advantage of by a cement plant built in present-day Concrete.</p><br>
<p>On April 1, 1924, the Lower Baker Dam was official begun by the Stone & Webster Company, in a site known as Eden Canyon. At first, 150 men worked on the project, which grew to a workforce of 900 by the next year. In early 1925, the Lower Baker Dam was completed to a height of 230 ft by a construction crew of 1,300, and in November of that year, the reservoir first filled to capacity. (The dam was later raised 55 ft to its present height.) The filling of the reservoir inundated the first railroad bridge across the river, the Baker River Bridge, a 190 ft-high wooden trestle. The first power generated at the dam was on November 19, 1925.</p><br>
<p>The construction of the dam and the forming of the reservoir had serious impacts on the salmon of the Baker River — the dam left only 1 mile (1.6 km) of river accessible to returning salmon. Before the dam was built, in many years, over twenty thousand salmon would return to the river to spawn. Afterwards, the returning population rarely would top 3,000 fish, and decreased even more in the 1980s, culminating in a record low of 99 fish in 1985. A structure was constructed across the lower Baker River below Lake Shannon, and this was originally used to capture returning anadromous fish and in conjunction with a few other facilities, carried fish up into Lake Shannon until 1959, when the system was extended to place the fish in Baker Lake instead.</p><br>
<p>On July 9, 1959, Upper Baker Dam was completed and the inflow to Lake Shannon became regulated for the first time. A major landslide in 1965 crushed the Lower Baker powerhouse and its two turbines, Units 1 and 2. Units 3 and 4 were constructed near the same spot, and the original, 990 ft-long penstock was lengthened by 420 ft, to 1,410 ft, to reach the new powerhouse. This new structure was built with a sloped roof to minimize potential damage. In 1991, a water diversion project, the Koma Kulshan Project, diverted about 120 cuft/s from two west-bank Lake Shannon tributaries to Baker Lake.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<p>One of the most abundant fishes in Lake Shannon is kokanee salmon, but this population is said to differ from true kokanee. True kokanees are established in freshwater, but the kokanees of Lake Shannon may be the by-product of sockeye salmon and coho salmon that spawned in tributaries of the lake — including Sulphur Creek and Thunder Creek — either via natural spawining gravels or artificially constructed ones. Some of the fry escaped the conduits that carry outmigrating young salmon into the lower Baker and the Skagit, establishing a population of kokanee.</p><br>
<p>There is also a population of bull trout present in the lake.</p><br>
<p>The Lake Shannon area is dominated by Douglas fir and other coniferous and deciduous woodlands.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Lake Shannon is about 1 mi north of Concrete and 35 mi east of Mount Vernon. The lake itself is mostly accessed by following the Baker River Road, which actually leads upstream along the valley to the boundary of North Cascades National Park. Parts of Lake Shannon are within the Mount Baker National Forest, which also contains all of Baker Lake. Swimming, boating and water-skiing are available on the lake, and kokanee salmon is abundant. However, the only access to the Lake Shannon boat launch area involves passing through privately owned land.</p><br>
<p>The lake is open for fishing from the last Saturday of April until the 31st of October in most years. There are plans to extend the current hiking trail system surrounding the two reservoirs by 8 mi and other general improvements within the hydroelectric project area.</p><br>
<p>Bear Mountain Bridge Road is a three-mile , two-lane section of US 6/202 from the west approach to Bear Mountain Bridge to a former toll house in the Town of Cortlandt, New York, United States.</p><br>
<p>Local residents sometimes refer to the road as the "goat trail".</p><br>
<p>It winds around the steep, rocky slopes of Anthony&#39;s Nose, the southernmost peak of the Hudson Highlands on the east side of the Hudson River. In its first mile from the junction with NY 9D it climbs 200 ft to a scenic overlook that looks out over Iona Island, Dunderberg Mountain, the city of Peekskill and the Charles Point power plant. There are interpretive displays on the history of the area during the Revolutionary War, where the Hudson River Chain was deployed and the Battle of Forts Clinton and Montgomery was fought.</p><br>
<p>Near its eastern end, approximately 2.5 mi from the bridge, is a Tudor Revival-style former toll house. It also served as the toll takers residence. In 2002 it was renovated by the Town of Cortlandt and now serves as an information center and gift shop for visitors to the region. A small parking lot serves hikers taking a popular trail along Anthonys Nose, through lands in the Camp Smith New York Army National Guard base just above the highway, to the Appalachian Trail just north of the bridge.</p><br>
<p>At its eastern end, before intersecting with US 9 at the Annsville Circle, the road falls to the level of the Hudson River, which it parallels. There, near the entrance to Camp Smith, looking south across a bay and the Metro-North railroad, can be seen the Indian Point nuclear power plant.</p><br>
<p>The state required the Harriman family to build the road when the bridge was built in the mid-1920s, in order to connect the bridge with US 9 just north of Peekskill. It was intended to be higher on the mountainside than the similar Storm King Highway, which had been built upriver a decade earlier. Like that road, it has a stone wall, made from the 21,000 cubic yards of material excavated during the highway&#39;s construction.</p><br>
<p>The legislation that allowed the bridge&#39;s construction stipulated that the road and bridge would revert to the state at no cost after 30 years. When that happened, the toll collected on the eastern end was eliminated, and the toll collector and his wife moved to the western toll house, where he served as bridge manager, until he retired. The road and toll house were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the Hudson Highlands Multiple Resource Area multiple property submission, the only property in Westchester County included in that group.</p><br>
<p>Sion Hill Place in the Lansdown area of Bath, Somerset, England was designed by John Pinch the elder and built between 1818 and 1820. Suspension bridge builder and brewer James Dredge, Sr. lived here in the mid 19th century.</p><br>
<p>Summerhill and numbers 1 to 9 have been designated as a Grade I listed building.</p><br>
<p>The Georgian terrace of numbers 1 to 9 is made up of 4 storey houses which is symmetrical from which the centre house, number 5, stands forward and has a pediment. The ground floor of all houses is rusticated. The houses at either end have curved segmental bows for their entire height. Numbers 1 to 4 were built by William Cowell Hayes a local painter, while Daniel Aust, from Walcot, built number 5 and possibly the others.</p><br>
<p>Summerhill House, which is attached to the west end of the terrace, came from Chippenham and was demolished and transported stone by stone.</p><br>
<p>Famous Residents</p><br>
<p>Madame Sarah Grand, Writer, Suffragist, and sometime Lady Mayoress of Bath (alongside Mayor Cedric Chivers) lived at number 7 from c1926-1942/3.</p><br>
<p>Trim Street in Bath, Somerset, England is a historic street, built in 1707, of shops and houses, many of which are listed buildings. It was named after George Trim who owned the land.</p><br>
<p>Number 5, which is also known as General Wolfe&#39;s house, is a two-storey building with a parapet and rusticated quoins, built by Thomas Greenway. The doorway has Ionic pilasters and a tympanum decorated with the implements of war. General James Wolfe was staying in the house when William Pitt, the elder commanded him to lead an expedition to Quebec.</p><br>
<p>Numbers 6 and 7 are three-storey houses with a mansard roof, as does number 8 and 9.</p><br>
<p>Number 10 dates from the late 18th century. It has 3 storeys plus an attic and mansard roof. The doorway has Doric columns and a pediment.</p><br>
<p>Numbers 11 to 13 form a block of three- and four-storey buildings now used as shops, while the 4 storey block at number 15 to 17 is still residential. Number 14 and number 9 are 3 storey residential buildings.</p><br>
<p>The Unitarian Church was built in 1795 by John Palmer. The apse was the added and interior altered in 1860. In 1809 the antiquarian Joseph Hunter, took up the post of Minister at the Chapel, there he met and married Mary Hayward, with whom he would have six children.</p><br>
<p>The Quaker Hill Historic District is a national historic district located at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It encompasses 151 contributing buildings in a residential neighborhood west of the central business district of Wilmington. The district includes 19th-century residential structures of all classes, along with several 19th-and 20th-century commercial structures. The predominant structures are three-story rowhouse dwellings in a variety of popular styles including Second Empire, Italianate, and Gothic Revival. Notable non-residential buildings include the Quaker Meetinghouse and Cemetery, St. Peter&#39;s Cathedral and Rectory , Union Methodist Church, and New Mount Bethel Baptist Church</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, with a boundary increase in 1985.</p><br>
<p>Upper Borough Walls is a historic street in Bath, Somerset, England. Many of the structures are listed buildings.</p><br>
<p>It takes its name from the section of the medieval wall of the city which still remains.</p><br>
<p>The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases was founded in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital, and is still known locally as The Min. Then, it provided care for the impoverished sick who were attracted to Bath because of the supposed healing properties of the mineral water from the spa. The original building was designed by John Wood the Elder and built with Bath stone donated by Ralph Allen. It was later enlarged, firstly in 1793 by the addition of an attic storey and later in 1860 by a second building erected on the west side of the earlier edifice. It is a Grade II listed building. There is a fine pediment, in Bath stone, on the 1860 building depicting the parable of the good Samaritan.</p><br>
<p>Number 10 was built between 1800 and 1820, when numbers 11 and 12 were built. Number 11 had a new shop front around 1900. The Full Moon Hotel is slightly earlier having been built between 1780 and 1800.</p><br>
<p>Numbers 18 and 18A, on the corner of Trim Street were built between 1730 and 1750. Broadleys Vaults Public House and Gascoyne House also make up a listed building.</p><br>
<p>Eastwood Manor Farm Steading in East Harptree, Somerset, England is a Grade I listed building.</p><br>
<p>It was built in 1860 by Robert Smith for William Taylor at a cost of £1,500. In the following decade the wrought-iron roofs and galleries carried on cast-iron columns, for extensive farm buildings at Eastwood were designed by William Humber, designer of roofs of the Cremorne music hall and theatre in London.</p><br>
<p>William Taylor had been the butler and married his masters daughter and inherited the family fortune.</p><br>
<p>The farm including the site for the construction of Eastwood Manor was bought by Charles Adams Kemble (son of the Reverend Charles Kemble, rector of Bath) in the 1860s. A series of fishponds were created on the farm by damming a small stream.</p><br>
<p>The barn covers 1.25 acre with 5 bays to the main facade. Cast iron pillars support the brickwork and wagon roof. It contained several feed stores, two bullock yards with fountains, a flax mill, cider press and threshing machine. The machinery was powered by a water mill which was replaced by steam, oil and diesel engines.</p><br>
<p>The United States Post Office in Peekskill, New York, is located on South Street. It is a brick building in the Colonial Revival architectural style, serving the 10566 ZIP Code, which covers the city of Peekskill and some surrounding areas in the town of Cortlandt.</p><br>
<p>It was built in the early years of the Great Depression as an economic stimulus. The neoclassic arch-headed windows on its front facade are unusual on a post office in New York built prior to the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration. In 1989 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The post office is located on the north side of South Street, on the southeast corner of a large, triangular lot it has all to itself. The ground slopes down to the north. Across the street are Peekskill Presbyterian Church and an assortment of commercial and residential buildings, similar to the neighborhood to the east, which has mixed-use apartment buildings. A row of mature oak trees screens the front of the building.</p><br>
<p>It is a one-story rectangular building sided in brick laid in English bond with limestone and wood trim. The south (front) facade features a projecting central pavilion with three semicircular wood-arched windows with keystones and rectangular blocks at the springlines. Such tripartite windows unified by a fanlike recessed tympanum, here typically with the radiating fluting of a patera, are elements of English Neoclassical architecture as practiced most familiarly by Robert Adam. The two bays on the ends have regular rectangular windows with keystones and a decorative recessed panel above. Below the two front windows flanking the main entrance are balustrades and cast iron fences around window wells allowing light into the basement.</p><br>
<p>Above the arches is raised metal lettering saying "UNITED STATES POST OFFICE" below a limestone frieze with geometric decoration. The roofline is marked by a plain cornice, topped with a limestone-coped brick parapet interrupted by stone balustrades above each of the three central bays.</p><br>
<p>A similar window treatment is found along the east profile. The west profile of the building has one window similar to the others, with a large wing projecting outwards for the loading dock. It wraps around the north as well.</p><br>
<p>Stone steps flanked by cast iron lampposts rise to the main entrance. The modern glass door is framed by projecting Doric pilasters. These support a plain frieze and denticulated cornice, above which is the same archivolt found on the flanking windows.</p><br>
<p>Inside, the lobby has marble wainscoting and high plaster ceilings with a deep cornice. The windows have Adamesque carved wood surrounds. A Palladian window is on the inside wall. The entrance to the postmaster&#39;s office has two narrow stop-fluted pilasters supporting blocks with carved urns and a swagged frieze.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The site was first used for a post office in 1911. Three years earlier, Congress had authorized the purchase of the lot to facilitate a move from the post office&#39;s previous location a few blocks away. An existing Victorian house was modified and renovated under plans by James Knox Taylor, the only time prior to World War II that the Treasury Department renovated an existing structure for postal use rather than build a new one.</p><br>
<p>In 1928 the current structure was authorized, and reauthorized again in 1930. The second time $165,000 ($ in contemporary dollars) was appropriated for construction, an early response to the Great Depression. The building was begun later that year and opened in 1931.</p><br>
<p>It was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect under James A. Wetmore and likely to have been the work of Louis A. Simon. It uses the free interpretation of "Colonial Revival" style which had been standard for most new post offices since 1915. The Peekskill design stands out in its use of distinctly neoclassical "Adam" features, particularly the English-bond brickwork and the windows. The latter feature would not be used on other post offices in New York (particularly Warsaw&#39;s) until the New Deal and its building programs were underway several years later.</p><br>
<p>In 1967 the large wing to the north and west was added. It is intended to be architecturally sympathetic, but is not considered to be contributing to the Register listing due to its relatively recent construction.</p><br>
<p>Bald Rock is a granite batholith located in Butte County, California, in the Plumas National Forest.</p><br>
<p>Located close to Lake Oroville, the dome peak overlooks Sacramento Valley and coastal mountain ranges.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The area was once home to the Maidu, a tribe of indigenous people. They left the rock with many unique features, such as, metate, grinding holes used to prepare acorns and grains.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>A short trail leads through the woods to the rock, which includes several crevasses and peculiar rock formations. The area is used for hiking, climbing, and rappeling. Camping is allowed but not closer than 300 yards from running water. The site also includes the ruin of a small shelter made from stacked rocks.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>The area is home to several animal species, including snakes, deer, mountain lion, and black bear.</p><br>
<p>The Jorat is the area of the Canton of Vaud  located between the Gros-de-Vaud, West and the Broye, East.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>It is a hill range that stretches from above Lausanne at the South and stretches toward Payerne at the North. Every stretch of land above 700 metres of altitude AMSL constitute the mainly forestry area called "Jora". The culminating point is the Montagne du Château (929 metres).</p><br>

<p>The Albegna is a river in southern Tuscany, the sources of which are located in province of Grosseto on the southern side of Monte Buceto, the southwestern part of the volcanic cone of Mount Amiata, along with the northern side of Monte Aquilaia, and the Riserva Poggio all&#39;Olmo.</p><br>
<p>The river goes downstream initially heading south, passing first from the town of Roccalbegna and moving later into the western part of the municipality of Semproniano, downstream to Rocchette di Fazio, and crossing the Bosco dei Rocconi Natural Reserve. Soon after, it enters the town of Manciano and, near the village of Saturnia, it turns right towards the south-west. Once it reaches the town of Marsiliana, it forms the dell&#39;Albegna plain.</p><br>
<p>The river flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea near the town of Albinia, bordered on the north by the tombolo of Giannella which combines Monte Argentario to the mainland.</p><br>
<p>Coverdale Cobblestone House is a historic home located at Leicester in Livingston County, New York. It was completed in 1837 and has a 2-story, three-by-four-bay cobblestone main block, a -story kitchen wing, and a 1-story cobblestone and frame carriage shed. It was built in the late Federal / early Greek Revival style. It features medium-sized cobbles in its construction.</p><br>
<p>The house underwent restoration between December 2005 and February 2010. The mortar has been refinished, new thermal insulated windows, rebuilt carriage house, inside re-plastered, refinished plank wooden floors, and new front porch. A new Crown Steam Boiler was installed in November 2009. A new cement basement floor was poured 4–6 inches thick; twin Roth 275 fuel oil tanks installed November 2010; a widow&#39;s walk was installed in summer of 2010.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Corridor is one of the world&#39;s earliest retail arcades, designed by architect Henry Goodridge and built in 1825, in Bath, Somerset, England.</p><br>
<p>The fashion for arranging shops in arcades arose in Paris in the late 18th Century. The Corridor followed the trend set by London&#39;s Burlington Arcade.</p><br>
<p>The Grade II listed arcade has a glass roof. The High Street end has a Doric colonnade. Each end has marble columns.</p><br>
<p>A musicians gallery, with a wrought iron balustrade and gilt lions heads and garlands, is in the centre of the arcade.</p><br>
<p>Number 7 was the photographic studio of William Friese-Greene.</p><br>
<h2>Bombing</h2><br>
<p>On Wednesday 18 December 1974, a telephone warning alerted police in Bath that a bomb was shortly to explode in The Corridor. The subsequent blast from a 5lb bomb planted by the IRA caused huge damage and forced the Corridor to undergo a major renovation programme. No one was hurt in the blast.</p><br>
<p>Baillie Island  is located off the north coast of Cape Bathurst in the Northwest Territories, Canada. The island formed part of the area used by the Avvaqmiut who are a branch of the Mackenzie Inuit.</p><br>
<p>A rare endemic plant known as hairy rockcress or hairy braya (Braya pilosa, genus Braya of family Brassicaceae) is known to grow in five locations on the Baillie Islands as well as the nearby Cape Bathurst. The plant is listed by the Northwest Territories Species at Risk Committee as threatened and by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada as endangered.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The first European to discover the island was John Richardson in 1826, who also named it. It was again visited by Richardson and John Rae, while searching the Northwest Passage for Franklins lost expedition. In 1915, the Hudsons Bay Company established a trading post on the island. While the post was being set up, it was visited by competing trader Christian Theodore Pedersen. By the 1920s, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had established a detachment on the island. It was at Baillie Island, in 1928, after returning from Cambridge Bay that Inspector Kemp, the Commanding Officer for the Western Arctic, appointed Henry Larsen captain of the St. Roch.</p><br>
<p>The Historic Church of St. Patrick is a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo located at 130 Avondale Avenue in Toledo, Ohio. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The current structure is the second to bear this name. Construction of the first church began in 1862 at the corner of Lafayette and 13th Streets. It was dedicated May 17, 1863 with construction costs totaling $27,000. However, by 1891, the building was deemed unsafe and demolished. Pews and other interior furnishings removed for use in a new building.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>Fr. Edward Hannin, pastor of St. Patricks, set out to create "the finest church in this part of the land," for his congregation and began to raise money for construction. When it was completed, St. Patricks was considered one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States. The exterior is constructed of Amherst blue sandstone and the interior contains ten red granite columns. The church was dedicated on April 13, 1901.</p><br>
<h2>Alterations</h2><br>
<p>The Orbe  is a river of the Rhine basin. It starts in France and flows to Switzerland to finally flow into the river Aare. On the final leg of its course, it takes the name &#39;La Thièle&#39; or &#39;La Thielle&#39;. Not to be mistaken with the Orbe, which is a tributary of the Arrats.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Orbe has its source near Rousses, forms the lac des Rousses before flowing down to lac de Joux in Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It disappears naturally underground for a stretch of 4 km, to reappear in Vallorbe - where a special ecotourism site was created, the Vallorbe Caves (note, to re-edit - http://www.grottesdevallorbe.ch/). Soon after, in Orbe, the river merges with the Talent and takes the name of &#39;Thielle&#39;. Flowing through Yverdon-les-Bains, it joins the lac de Neuchâtel. It flows out of it through the Thielle channel to the Nidau-Büren channel in Nidau, just before the regulating dam Port established between Port and Brügg that controls the levels of the three lakes of Seeland.</p><br>
<p>The Orbe drains all the waters from the Canton of Vaud to the Rhine, with the exception of the river Venoge, divided by the Mormont, watershed between the former and the Rhone basins.</p><br>

<p>Mount Zion is a 4,278 ft peak in the Olympic National Forest. The peak is located 9.5 mi northwest of Quilcene, and near Lords Lake and Bon Jon Pass. Billed as one of the easier hikes in the Olympics, Zion offers a 1,340 ft elevation gain in just under 2 mi.</p><br>
<h2>Trail Characteristics</h2><br>
<p>For those testing its trail in June and July, rhododendrons in full bloom crowd the sides of the path. The trail ascends through remnants of long-ago fires, second growth fir and cedar, spring blooming rhododendrons, Oregon grape, salal and leafy ferns. Near the top of the trail, basalt monoliths rise from the wooded slopes. One of the tallest offers westward views of Gray Wolf Ridge.</p><br>
<p>Views of the Olympic Mountains are screened by trees, but glimpses of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan are there for the taking to the northeast and Mount Rainier can be seen to the southeast.</p><br>
